While riding my bike yesterday evening, I noticed this old chair in a neighbor's trash pile ready for pick up on Tuesday morning.
Voices in my head: "No Joy, don't bring home another piece of trash . You don't need it."
I go home, happen to look at a blog that was featuring old cast-off dishes, etc. charmingly displayed and realized I simply must go back for that chair. After all, if it's really too decrepit to do anything with, I can set it out in my trash. I yelled to Handyman that I was off to trash pick and I'd be right back.
I knocked on the door and asked the lady if I could have the chair. She said, "You mean the one without a seat? Help yourself. And thanks for asking first!"
I grabbed the chair and walked back home with only a vague idea of what I would do with it. Maybe put it in my flower bed? Set a pot of flowers in the missing seat?
I placed it here by the fence, next to the morning glory, clematis, and pots on the trellis, deciding I'd examine it more closely in the day light. I know, it's pretty rough. If it stays outside, I'll leave it as is. If I bring it inside, I'll scrape off loose paint, wipe it down, and perhaps add a seat. I can see quilts stacked on it, or draped over the back, or maybe a potted plant on the seat. No matter, I'll have fun with it, and I'm not out any money. Just an old-fashioned sweet, country-ish, little find.
Any creative ideas for me?

I think your plan to scrape the paint is a good one. As you spend time with it, it will "speak" to you and you'll figure out something wonderful to do with it! Great find :)
Definitely bring it in the house! It appears to "fighting" the fence.

Ya think?
I'd have done the same! I love it where it is but left outside in all weathers it will rot so perhaps after a while in that little vignette you have there with the morning glory and the bird house against the fence you will know what to do with it. I'd say it wants to remain somewhat "distressed" and vintage in style but I'm with Rebecca in that I think given time it will speak to you and tell you what it wants to have done! Do show us what you decide in due course.
JOy, I would have done the same thing!! I love finding others casts offs... really like this chair very much...I'm anxious to see what you can come up with. Your creative.. the finished project will be great!
Hi Joy. As far as I can recall you are pretty handy with fabric and if I had to redo your new find I would probably sand off all the paint and bring out the wood colour anew with a coat of poly wax sealer. Old wood has a very special quality. I would then use one of your fabric creations on a new foam covered seat and give it to one of your family members, maybe Sil, for Christmas this year. But then again that's just me. :) nice find. Love, Geoff.
Sorry, that was meant to read Fil.
He He silly me.
Well, I'm an odd one, but I love it just how it looks - all scrappy and charming.
I would have easily picked up that chair as well. I had an old chair (similar) that I picked up at a yard sale many, many years ago, and I painted it as a welcome chair, installed a couple of tiny birdhouses on the top of the chair on the ends and always had a plant on it every growing season. It finally rotted out - I think I had it about 13 years. I scrapped the bottom pieces for firewood, but I couldn't bear to part with the back part of the chair that still has the "welcome" painted on it with the bird houses, so it's just sort of leaning along the wall beside the entrance to the garage and I added another piece of garden art under it and I think it looks cute there, though I noticed my husband eyeing it with a bewildered look the other day, probably thinking "What is Linda doing now?"
Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I may scrape it a tad, wipe it down, bring it in, make a makeshift seat, and stack quilts or such on it. The next decision is where to put it? Will take a pic when it's in it's final resting place!
I had an old chair for years, that I would put in the garage for the winter and drag it out the next spring. I put it in different gardens (as I had many) each year it had a new home. Sometimes with petunias in it, sometimes the really big moss rose.I had a large planter that just fit the seat altho the seat was not completely gone, just riddled with holes.

I'm hearing lots of creative ideas...thanks so much.
Whatever you decide to do with the chair....... I love it, and it was a great (cheap) find.
I like it next to the bird house and vines....... , but I'd like it elsewhere too!
Funny I did the same thing a couple of years ago only this one had a seat. I painted it and keep it in the hallway . Everyone throws their junk on it so I suppose it became a junk catcher!!
I don't think that's what you want to do with yours. I'd put a pot in it for flowers and paint something pretty on the back. The only thing is that it won't last long outside. Maybe you could keep it on a porch with an awning over it, that would help. I see lots of potential, good luck. Love Di ♥
IT ROCKS! WHAT A SCORE Joy!
If it was mine... I'd scrape off a little of the peels... not too much, and paint it that depression era green color you wrote in the post above that was too much on the walls. lol AND THEN set a WHITE enamel pitcher on it FULL of real looking wildflowers so when those winter doldrums come... you can set back in that pretty new room of yours and gaze over at that chair and laugh at old man winter. :)
I like the idea of the pitcher sitting on it, I even have an old pitcher. At any rate, I've got to decide soon before it rains!
